Google Drops “Mic”…Best and Worst April Fools for 2016

Every year more and more companies get involved when it comes to April Fools. Companies like Google, Samsung and BMW like to jump in to the mix. Google has been participating in April Fools hoaxes since the year 2000 but this year things may have caused more harm than laughter and possibly some people’s jobs.

This year Google decided to introduce a “Gmail Mic Drop” embedded in to your email. When users went to send an email they were given an extra send button option which would add a gif of a minion dropping a mic to the end of your email. Some users however mistakenly didn’t notice it. To make matters worse, if you used it while replying to a thread, you would not receive any more replies from anyone.

“Thanks to Mic Drop I just lost my job. I am a writer and had a deadline to meet. I sent my articles to my boss and never heard back from her. I inadvertently sent the email using the ‘Mic Drop’ send button. There were corrections that needed to be made on my articles and I never received her replies. My boss took offence to the Mic Drop animation and assumed that I didn’t reply to her because I thought her input was petty (hence the Mic Drop). I just woke up to a very angry voicemail from her which is how I found out about this ‘hilarious’ prank.”

To make matters more worse, apparently a bug made every email sent using the normal send button still added the “mic drop” gif. Which led to horrible emails like this from a funeral home…

Google eventually caught the error and also offered an apology. The damage may have already been done for some people though.

“Well, it looks like we pranked ourselves this year. 😟” the company said later in its blog. “Due to a bug, the Mic Drop feature inadvertently caused more headaches than laughs. We’re truly sorry. The feature has been turned off. If you are still seeing it, please reload your Gmail page.”

Not all was doom and gloom for other companies chiming in on the popular prank holiday.
